How to choose a necklace: length, pendants and thoughtful gifts

A necklace's length and pendant shape affect how it sits with an outfit. Before choosing from our women's necklaces, compare a piece you already enjoy wearing with the measurements on the product page. That gives you a more useful starting point than a photograph alone.

Quick answer: how do you choose a necklace?

Start with where you want the necklace to sit, then consider the pendant's size, the chain or cord and the fastening. Choose a design you would enjoy with your usual clothes. For a gift, notice the recipient's existing necklaces and check the listed dimensions before ordering.

A pendant with a clear focal point

The Opalite Swirl Necklace, pictured above, has a pale pendant framed by a winding metal detail. The contrast between the smooth centre and curved wrap makes the pendant the focus of the design. It is an example to consider if you prefer a single decorative element rather than several charms.

Look at the product's separate photographs as well as the styled main image. The main photograph helps you see its colour and overall shape; it does not establish the pendant's dimensions or where it will sit on you. Check those details on the listing, and ask us if a measurement you need is missing.

Compare length with a necklace you own

Fasten a favourite necklace and note where it sits with the neckline you intend to wear. Then lay it flat and measure its full length, including the fastening. Compare that measurement with the new necklace's stated length, checking whether an extender is included or whether the listing gives an adjustable range.

Remember that a pendant hangs below the chain or cord. Two necklaces with the same chain length can therefore have different overall drops. Body proportions and clothing also affect the result, so a length label is a comparison point rather than a promise of the same fit on everyone.

Think about the neckline and pendant size together

Try deciding whether you want the pendant to rest against skin or sit over fabric. A busy print can make a small motif less noticeable, while a plain top leaves more room for the pendant's detail. There is no single correct combination: the useful question is whether the design remains easy to see and comfortable to wear.

If you plan to layer necklaces, compare their lengths before choosing. Leaving a visible gap can help each pendant stand out. Start with two pieces rather than buying several at once, and check that the chains and decorations do not catch on one another.

Choosing a necklace as a gift

Use the recipient's habits as clues. Do they wear short chains, long pendants or cords? Do they prefer a recognisable motif or a simple shape? A design that fits those preferences is easier to choose than one based only on a birthday or anniversary theme.

Check the stated materials, fastening, packaging and delivery information for the specific item. Do not infer metal content from colour or assume every necklace arrives with the same presentation. For help comparing necklaces with other types of gift, read our women's jewellery buying guide.

Keep chains separate between wears

The National Association of Jewellers recommends storing jewellery separately and fastening necklaces before storage to help prevent tangling. Follow the care instructions for the actual materials in your piece; a cleaning method for one metal or stone may not suit another.

Return to the necklace collection with three checks in mind: the length you want, the pendant dimensions and a design you will enjoy wearing. If any of those details are unclear, resolve them before buying.
